![]() ![]() Ideally, they want the candidates with the best grades, but when you've got two candidates with the same grades, and only one place, who do you give it to? For most unis, if they've got one person with AAB who went to a private sixth-form college, had personal tutors, rich parents, gap-year abroad, etc, and another person who also achieved AAB but did it at a state-school and at home, while working a part-time job and caring for a parent, they are going to give the place to the second student. Universities have a lot of candidates, and a hard time differentiating between them (which is why UCAS forms have stuff like personal statements and references). I strongly suspect that, assuming you get the grades, this will actually count in your favour. I'm not in admissions or anything, hopefully someone with more knowledge can confirm or deny this, but: I would consider just writing a paragraph or two yourself briefly explaining your circumstances and why you are unable to provide a reference from someone else, and putting that in the reference field. ![]()
